One of the first things we did when we bought this house nearly 5 years ago was to rip out a huge chicken coop in the back yard. I must have been overwhelmed with so many things outside of my comfort zone (like, say, a crapshack that needed to be gutted, a new neighborhood, a new way of life). I never in a million years thought I’d ever find myself a chicken raiser.
Yet, last spring, we started our life with chickens at the pleading of my little girl and it’s been really fun. The pictures in that post are still some of my favorite pictures ever. Who’d have thought chickens would be in my life? This past fall, we started getting eggs everyday and I was officially convinced it had been a good, fun idea to be raising chickens.
This journey hasn’t been without it’s bumps in the road. One of our supposed hens started crowing a few months ago. We quickly changed her name to Bo Diggity. He drove us crazy, our neighbors crazy, and he was mean – really mean. We never wanted a rooster and our comfort level with him waned daily. Soon, we found him a new home on a nice big farm near where my hubby works. He still sees him almost everyday, where it has been reported he is truly king of the hill.
A couple weeks ago, my daughter looked at me with those big blue eyes of hers and asked if we could get a couple more baby chicks. I rolled my eyes, feigning resistance, then said okay with a sigh.
I now call my daughter “chickie mama” and she does a good job of fulfilling the role. I am pretty sure the chicks don’t know that she really isn’t their mother. They follow her all over the place and love to sit on her lap, snuggling. Our other chicks weren’t like this when we got them. Maybe it’s just like real motherhood. When it’s all so new, everybody is stressed out. This time, we knew what we were doing so everyone has been relaxed and happy about the whole thing.
Their names are Ashley and Lucy. They love each other and they love us.
And surprisingly, I think they’re kind of okay too.

so how many do you have all together now? that picture is so cute!! I’ve been thinking about adding a few more too.

I’m secretly afraid of chickens – my brother shut me in my grandparents coop once and I’ve never recovered. I’m sure the chickens never did either considering all the screaming they endured. But I really, really, want some. Thanks for the encouragement, and your daughter couldn’t be sweeter if she tried.

Adorable!!! I had two pet chickens when I was little. Chicken Little and Chicken Big. My mom has photos of me playing and going down the slide with Chicken Little. She was my best friend.
Now my aunt raises chickens (very spoiled ones) and one of them even has her own blog and Facebook Page! ha! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lola-the-Chicken/111522968863254

Great post, love the chicks but what I’m really taking from this is the new word “crapshack”. I LOVE that word. My family and husband won’t like you for giving it to me though because I’m pretty sure I’m going to tell them to help me “clean up this crapshack” at least once a day…ha ha ha!
Yay for crapshack!

This is adorable and I love that your daughter wanted to “save” the chicks. I too like another one commenting and terrified of chicks, chickens, ducks and really anything with a beak. I was attacked by a mother hen when I was 3 and still have a scar on my eyelid. I just wanted to play with the baby chicks but mamma hen just didn’t want it. Looks like everyone here has the situation under control!
Love your stories and read them each day! Thanks

Hi Emily,
Just wanted to comment on your chicks. I think your pics are soo cute. We used to have chicks a couple of years ago and now after seeing your post I’m thinking about raising them again. Also I wanted to thank you for commenting on my post over at my Blog Elizabeth at Home. Since I just recently began blogging this is all new for me.

Hi,
I came across your blog today at “The Bold Life”.
Love the photos here (especially the second and the last one) and found it so heartwarming that your little girl wanted to rescue the chicks.
I can just visualize right now – how amazed and excited my lil girl would be too if she could look after such chicks. But, out city apartment deprives us of such small but precious joys….

That photo of the chick on your head is great! I love little chicks. They are SO cute. Your blog looks fantastic. I’ve been without a computer for two weeks, so I missed the transformation. Just wanted to let you know it’s awesome. I’m going to go explore your pages.

I love your little chicky babies! I finally convinced my husband last May to allow me to get 3 babies (that is all that is allowed in our city) – so, in the middle of a new home development in the “burbs”, i have a mini-farm. 2 orpingtons and 1 easter egger – and they just laid their first eggs a few days ago, I get green and brown. Just baking my first chocolate chip cookies using our “farm” fresh eggs today. I LOVE having backyard chickens…and my neighbors have no idea. Great pics!
