A Morning Walk

A Morning Walk

It’s been a while since I have slowed down enough to just spend a couple hours noticing. Usually on days that both of my kids are at school, I feel like I need to be doing something. I always get asked that:  ”what will you do while the kids are in school?” and I feel like I am supposed to answer something along the lines of find a cure for cancer to somehow validate that I have time to myself. Like I can’t just say “exercise, eat a meal in peace, or read a book”. Today, I attempted to slow down, take the pressure off of myself and get back to something I enjoy. I haven’t been taking many pictures lately, both out of feeling uninspired and feeling like every time I pick up my camera I am a big fat failure. I let it all slide today and just enjoyed a couple hours to myself of doing nothing more than strolling around this old town and taking pictures.

I snooped at some beautiful downtown homes. I am too self conscious to stand in front of someone’s home and hold a camera up to my face, adjust settings and snap away. So, all of these pics are taken from the hip, trying to be discreet.

I nearly stepped on this in the middle of the street. So, I picked it up and took it’s picture.

The I proceeded to obsessively snap photos of all of the gorgeous doors and windows I was walking past. Some of the homes along the really really really old streets are truly right there at the street. No front yard, no sidewalk. Just front door, curb, road. I love these homes so much and I imagine how old they are and how many stories they have inside the simple, beautiful doorways.

I also sat on a bench by a lake right downtown and did nothing. It was wonderful.

What do you do when you feel the tug to slow down and notice more?

Thanks for the reminder to slow down and take it all in. We can never get enough reminders for that, especially with the new school year beginning.

I think you take pretty good pictures from your hip! and, wow, I love where you live.

p.s. – so get the “what do you do all day” question.

Beautiful! I love the window and door shots especially. They are so full of color.

I have occasionally stopped and taken a full-on shot of a house, but I always feel sort of silly .. and hope no one is going to run out and yell or be suspicious.

Great shots– especially since they’re taken from the hip. Sound like a nice morning. When I need to slow down, I head to the beach…

Nothing makes walking more fun than taking in the beautiful views. I also think you bring up a really good point about answering the “what do you do” question. I do have to ask because I’m curioius…why can’t you say,”exercise, eat a meal in peace, or read a book”?

Looks like the perfect day! Did you really take those photos shooting from the hip? They are wonderful! I don’t take that good of pictures with the camera at my face.

Why is that doing nothing is never ok? At least that’s what we believe or others make us feel we should believe. I always feel guilty if I waste away an afternoon reading….crazy.

Glad you enjoyed your day and thanks for the reminder to slow down sometimes.

Like you, I used to feel like I needed say that I was doing something terribly important when my daughter was at school.

Now I am becoming more comfortable with saying that I am going for a run, going to a yoga class, or catching up with a friend, or sewing or writing or playing the piano.

This usually leads on to a conversation about one of these things that the other person wants to know more about and then laments that they would like to do “x” but that they don’t have the time……

Maybe you call your Blog – “From the Hip”! Great photos and great post! I think we are better individuals when we slow down…but I have just recently discovered this…I haven’t picked up my camera in a month – you have inspired me to do so – thanks for sharing!

Your town looks completely charming. I think my new favorite thing might be going for a walk there, too :) When I need to slow down, I’ll pick up a book – probably a novel – and spend a couple of hours buried in it.

I love those pics of the old houses!! It looks like downtown Savannah. LOVE the historic houses.

I am blogging about just such a slow-down, notice-more kind of change, myself, as I try to remodel my own life. So glad to find someone else doing the same!!
