Lake Placid

Lake Placid

While on vacation and ignoring my blog, hubby and I snuck away for a little overnight getaway from the cottage and went into the Adirondacks to visit Lake Placid. Neither of us had ever been, we heard great things and it looked nice enough on the website. I booked a hotel room for the night, printed out our directions on mapquest, and we headed out on the 2 hour drive having no idea what to expect. Only later did my mom learn we left the kids with her. Just kidding.

(so I stink at taking photos from moving vehicles)

The whole drive, hubby was talking about how he couldn’t wait to find a spot for lunch when we arrived where we could just sit down and he could have a big sandwich. We climbed out of our car, walked a block and saw a place that I think was called something like 41 sandwiches. We went there. It was awesome, so yummy. As we stood in line, we both noticed silently that everyone around us was fit. Like, really fit. You know, like just finished an ironman fit. Seriously. We learned as more people came into the restaurant and we read their shirts that there had been an ironman there the day before and we were surrounded by ironmen and women. Way to make me feel guilty about being fat and lazy! :)

We ate our lunch then wandered the streets until we could check into our hotel.

After we checked in, we wandered some more and then had dinner right on Mirror Lake. It was so relaxing and pretty (other than all the iron athletes around us at dinner talking about how fit they were *grin* )

We knew our hotel had a nice restaurant/bar and patio area and the hotel we stayed at was way up on a hill so we would have an awesome view. So, we walked back there and had a glass of wine outside and listened to more iron athletes talk about the race and enjoyed watching the moon come up over the mountains in the distance. You’ll have to trust me how pretty it was – another instance during which I am a horrible photographer.

Really, I am not bitter about the ironmen and women. I think they are amazing. I was in awe of them. 2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike and then running a marathon? I am impressed. And I even went back to the cottage and swam a mile just to not feel so lazy. It just amused me the whole time we were there that I would pick that place at that time to go relax.

The next morning, we went and found a cafe

where we enjoyed coffee and breakfast on the main street before we headed up to Whiteface Mountain to take a gondola ride.

I have never been on a gondola before, but hubby in all his being raised in Colorado and skiing all his life in races had been on many. I thought it was so cool and he was unimpressed. He liked the view at the top though!

We got a stranger to take our pic at the top and she totally got a pic of us without the mountain behind us. Ha.

Then we went down the mountain, drove around town a bit more and drove off down the road back toward the cottage where there were no iron athletes to be seen. We were only gone a bit over 24 hours but it was so great to get away. To eat without cutting anyone else’s food, to go to the bathroom uninterrupted, to not worry about bedtimes. We don’t go out nearly enough so a date once or twice a year was worth the time and money to make this little trip. We were happy to get home, the kids were happy to see us, and we all had a great time away.

Now, don’t you want to plan your next trip to Lake Placid? It’s really fabulous.

I hate to admit this…Lake Placid is only a couple of hours from me, yet I’ve never really been. :(

LOVE this area. I am from upstate NY(currently living in DE) and worked for a dentist years ago in Lake Placid. Thanks for the pics-makes me miss home! :)

I think I was in Lake Placid the same day you were, Monday, July 26th, the day after the Ironman. The weather was great and Mirror Lake was clear and warm enough to swim in. Since we had two ten-year-old boys with us, that’s how we spent our time, swimming and kayaking on the lake. It was fun to read of how it might have been if it had been a “just us adults” weekend.

You can’t be that much out of shape if you can swim a mile. You may not be ripped like the ironmen and ironwomen who finish the tough and hilly Lake Placid race, but a one mile swim is a great thing to do anyway. – Your post might just motivate me to get back there and do some rock climbing before the winter comes, when I might have to go back for some ice climbing.
