watching for beauty

When my 2 year old son sees my camera in my hands, he’ll say, “are doing, mama?”. For those unfamiliar with toddler speak, that’s “What are you doing, mama?”. Yesterday, he asked this question of me, and my 5 year old daughter replied, “She’s watching for beauty, buddy”. I don’t think I have to mention how much I love that girl.

And so it was, I was watching for beauty. Our new routine and schedule has led to a huge shift. I find myself more structured, more organized, and more present than ever in the every day. I don’t feel overwhelmed or behind anymore. I not only have 6 hours a week that I haven’t had in 4 years in which I can take care of things without someone screaming for a wipe or a cracker or a trip to the store to buy new trains. I have 6 hours a week to be centered and that has seeped into all of the other hours too.

I picked up my camera rarely this week. Probably a combination of my muses being at school and myself being too in each moment to grab it. I find myself longing to grab my camera though, to capture the simple, little moments of beauty each day, and I missed it this week.

Today, I was watching for beauty and I found it.

In flowers…

In helping hands

In sneaky fingers…

I was watching for beauty through the lens.
