Fun Uses For Mason Jars
September 10, 2009 at 9:47 pm , by Emily
I absolutely adore mason jars, how simple and clean and uncluttered they look. How versatile they are. Someday I may actually use them for jam and other such really awesome things that really organized and cool people do. But for today, I am making use of the jars we have around here (some we bought in a fit of overzealousness when we thought we might actually pick enough figs to make jam) and others that are recycled glass jars from other things we’ve bought at the store, like tomato sauce.
I have a lot of them, lined up in the kitchen on a high open shelf and I actually like how they look there, empty, bare, simple. I snagged a few from my collection and started using them around the house as creative storage containers.

and who needs a junk drawer when they can have a pretty little junk jar? Okay, I also have a junk drawer. This is more like the dump your pockets here jar.
I love how mason jar candles look.
They’re great in the kitchen too, for food stuffs to keep the critters out. Now you know how my days are fueled – caffeine and sugar!
I think filling a few with the things my kids collect outside, like sea shells would be cool. I think they’d be great for craft supplies for me and the kids too. What about you? Do you have some other ideas for me? I would love to hear them.

You are full of good ideas! The jars are pretty when they are empty. You can also turn them into lamps with a lamp kit then also fill the jar.

I’ve started collecting mason jars.
I love all the uses you’ve found for yours.
ONE nice thing about this economy is that it makes us be creative with everyday things.

Your mason jars look orderly without being stuffy. Filling one with a button collection would look whimsical and colorful!
Enjoy,

I love mason jars too! One of the things I use them for is for a cookie jar. I actually did a post on mason jars in which I listed out a lot of different ways to use them. http://www.notthejetset.net/2009/02/countless-uses-of-mason-jar.html Feel free to check it out to see my list of ideas.

I love mason jars, too! They are so practical and your ideas were fabulous.
Last week or so, I posted on antique blue and green mason jars. Some are as old as 1858!! Hope you stop by for a chat and take a look at: http://rosecottagegardensandfarm.com/2009/09/02/fall-nesting-summer-in-a-jar/
Have a lovely weekend!

I love your ideas. I love using mason jars and recycled ones from store products. I especially like how dried beans look in the pint sized jars– so pretty and easier to store than the dusty little bags they come in.

Mason jars are wonderful! I inherited a collection of them from my MIL. She lived on a farm and actually used them for canning! I use them to store everything, but I also have an open shelf with several rows of jars full of beautiful dried beans. Beans and lentils come in so many dazzling colors – I just love the earthiness of this dislay!

I have loads of them in the kitchen, different shapes and sizes for beans, nuts and dried fruit etc, but I saw a post last month, over at Melissa’s I think, about using mason jars for holiday keepsakes. I was so inspired, I went out and bought a few big enough to display all my Greek beach pebbles. Displaying them in groups looks good and cuts down on dusting!(We don’t have actual mason jars here, if Mason is a brand as well as a style. We just call them storage jars.)
Your photos are inspiring; I love how you’ve added the wee bit of string.

We use mason jars in the bathroom for q-tips, cotton balls, misc. stuff that we want nearby but we can’t just set on the sink. Great post!

I take quart size mason jars, put some sand in them, nestle a lit votive candle into the sand, tie some raffia(sp.?) around the top. They look really pretty at night time. My absolute favorite thing to do is to get those very large Bell Mason jars and stuff them with the tiny lights on a string. I use colored lights or white lights. Try it and you will be amazed how awesome they look on a kitchen counter or on the bathroom counter. Stunning on a mantle display at Christmas time, too!

There’s nothing better than a mason jar. Nothing! I have lots of the blue antique ones with zinc lids that I fill with bulk herbs, and dried yummies from our garden. Loved your pics and post.

I use the jam sized masons for making homemade yogurt. I can make 2 doz individual yogurts in about 15 minutes and not have all of that extra plastic. I usually fill them 2/3 full to leave room for fresh cut fruit.

My inlaws left behind an amazing collection of old Mason jars. I am so anxious to clean them up and put them to good use!
Some are in great shape and I’m going to use them for canning. The others that are not as good are going to get put to storage work!
Have a good day
