Getting Messy
July 8, 2009 at 9:41 am , by Emily
I’ve shared some of the things the kids do when we go outside. There are abundant possibilities to explore here.. The greatest happy accident this summer is that my dad ordered a huge dirt pile to help with the stone patio this summer (I’ll show you that sometime!). Did you know kids like dirt? Big piles of it? Seriously, they do.
From hiking to berry picking to planting flowers, and don’t forget the swimming, kayaking, bubble blowing, and treasure hunting. The outdoor fun has been a huge part of our time here over the last 3 weeks. And if all those things weren’t messy enough, there is this little outdoor activity. It’s simple, fun, and quick to clean up. Unroll some white paper, put some finger paints on it, put the kids in swimsuits and let them create. Nothing better than a blank slate to make them feel the creative possibilities are endless.

When they are done, stick them in the bathtub and hose down the deck. Fabulous, fun, easy.
We’ve had our fair share of cold and rainy days too, so tomorrow I’ll be sharing how we explore and create inside.

Hi Emily,
You know, this applies so much to life too – sometimes we just have to start with a blank slate and start adding our own color to it. It may be messy, it may be a masterpiece – but if we’re doing it with true joy in our heart – it’s the right thing to do. (probably not the angle you were going with on this post…)
The pictures are so cool – especially the foot shot – that’s really getting in there and having fun! Good for you guys, creating in some very fun ways!

I did this with my kids a couple of weeks ago. It was a blast. There is something about paint between the fingers and toes that makes it so much more fun than the paintbrush. My kids had just as much fun washing off.
