Rainy Days

Rainy Days

The kids and I took an impromptu trip to the beach on Sunday evening. While we were there, the skies got dark, so we hurried off for home before we got caught in a storm. I had no idea then what kind of week we were in for. It hasn’t stopped raining for 4 days. Our life has mostly carried on as usual – school days, play time, baking, crafting, playdates – but it’s felt different somehow.  There has been puddle jumping, building forts with couch cushions, enjoying picnics in the living room, making mud pies in the yard, and a lot of rejoicing as we watched hubby’s drainage system work it’s magic, keeping the water from our house. I think his head grew an inch or two this week.

All in all, it has been a fun few days. Days that have forced me to slow down, be purposeful with our time at home, get creative, and let go and just enjoy what each day brings. One afternoon, I had gone out to do a quick errand while hubby stayed home with the kids. I pulled in the driveway, walked inside, dumped my purse and keys on the counter, grabbed my kids and led them outside and proceeded to jump up and down until we were all drenched. After their initial shock wore off, the shrieks of laughter began and they joined in. After a few minutes, soaked from head to toe, we headed inside for warm showers followed by curling up on the couch with hot chocolate.

There are only so many moments in this life that we have to make the most of. Each time I found myself getting annoyed or frustrated with being stuck inside, I made sure I did something – new, fun, different – so we were making the best of our time. We baked chocolate chip cookies from scratch and I taught my daughter that they are just a little bit yummier dipped in milk.

Today was day 4 of being drenched. Hubby had off work, so we were all enjoying a quiet day at home. My daughter asked me if I’d like to go on a date with her. I accepted and off we each hurried to get ready. While I showered, she put on her prettiest dress, asked daddy to put a bow in her hair, and her nicest shoes. I slinked squeezed into my black dress pants and a decent top without any food smeared on it, picked out some heels, and declared myself ready to go. She held my hand as we walked and we enjoyed our simple time together, sipping milkshakes and enjoying the little time we have together just the two of us.  She’s different when it’s just us – calmer, more mature, more articulate – and I enjoyed those moments of holding my little girl’s hand while quietly beaming with pride at who she’s becoming.

I haven’t seen anything like days on end of rain since we moved here over 3 years ago. I love blue skies and sunshine. But I learned this week that moments are made brighter not by the shining sun, but by how we choose to see them and what we decide to make of them.

This is beautiful. I want it to rain tomorrow just so I can take Zack outside to jump up and down.

We got that rainy weather on Sunday and Monday when we were in your neck of the woods. I’m sorry to hear that it’s continuing, but looks like you have definitely made the best of it.

I”m not sure if you should ever move to Seattle. It rains A LOT. On the bright side though, all your inside projects would be complete : )

Your post reminds me of the first year I moved to Atlanta when it rain every weekend for the entire spring and summer. I thought that I was living in Seattle because my umbrella had become my new best friend. Fast forward dozen of years later and here in Georgia we have two very long years of dry ugly drought. We were forced to watch our beautiful grass and flowering gardens and bushes die a slow and painful death because outdoor watering was not an option. Thankfully the rains are slowly returning this spring. Yep your right – God controls it all and none of this is up to any of us. It’s all just a matter of perspective and how much we appreciate that which is given. I hope that you have a great Memorial Day weekend with your family.

Date night! What a great idea. Mr. Savvy’s parents regularly have dinner with their granddaughter, “The Divine Miss M,” where they all dress up and cook something easy together. That sounds date-like to me!

That is so utterly cute! I take it the date was a great success? :) I love rainy days because they are a great excuse to stay inside with someone you care about and then also help you appreciate the sunny ones. Beautiful story!

What a wonderful attitude you have about being locked inside. Your children will remember these times for ever. I live in your city and the wind and rain have been unprecedented (not counting hurricanes of course). I am definitely going for a walk tonight after dinner regardless of what radar shows!!

I loved this post because I really do enjoy having a variety of weather. I prefer the sun, of course, but after awhile I want to nestle in the house with hot chocolate and a book. But a day or two later, I’d love to come out and see the sun again!

It was fun to read about you jumping in the rain and going out on a date with your daughter. My son is more mature when I get him out of the house for a date too. Much less cranky and ornery :-) … guess we should go out on more dates :-)

This was a sweet post. Why is it that our children are so good when they are alone and not with brother or sister?? I like how she asked you on a date! LOL! We had a whole week of rain and I was ready for sunshine, that’s for sure. Hope it clears up for your Memorial Day Weekend. I think it is heading our way now, guess we’ll have to make some cookies:-)

Like you I treasure and adore the one on one time when it can be found with each of my children. The connection seems so intense when it is just mother and child – I wish I could bottle it !! le

What a great post! I love spending time with the kids one on one. They do act different, more grown up! We’ve had a ton of rain, but the garden is happy. :-)
