Once upon a time (now bear with me, this is relevant) I went on a lengthy business course led by some so-called experts from a university. My organisation was paying them a lot of money for running this. It was useless. At the final session, in front of our Regional Director, we told them it was rubbish.
I will never forget what our Regional Director said to us – “Your ability to say what you thought is an indication of the good rapport you have built up with these people.”
OK, your daughter said what she did in temper, and on thinking about it more calmly, said that she hadn’t meant it. But, she had been able to say what she felt. She wasn’t afraid of you in any way. She knew that you would not hurt or strike her for speaking her mind. You have obviously established an environment where she feels safe enough to say anything.
Not all children have this. Many live in fear, and have to walk on eggshells around their grown-ups for whatever reason. Your ability to talk it through calmly with her afterwards fills me with awe, so you must be doing something very right!!!
