It’s Friday evening. My kids are both under the weather. Hubby is tired. But we have a routine on Friday that we haven’t let slide today. It started a couple months ago when I decided to make homemade pizza for dinner and it happened to be a Friday. My daughter pulled up a step stool and helped me make dough and then helped me add toppings when it was time. It was nice. And so a tradition was born.
I have tried to be somewhat casual about it all. I don’t go out of my way to purposefully get things at the store for pizza night. As long as I have what we need for the dough, we make the pizzas with what we have.
After pizza, we usually play Wii together until bedtime. This is not set in stone, as anyone who knows me knows that I would never play Wii golf in place of watching March Madness. Tonight, it’s white pizza and watching basketball together.
This got me thinking of other simple routines that our family has settled into.
- When hubby gets home each afternoon, he goes straight to the swingset with the kids and pushes them on the swings
- We drink coffee together while he pushes and we chat about our days
- On Saturday and Sunday mornings we have pancakes for breakfast
- When I was growing up, we always had spaghetti for dinner on Monday nights. Still, if I visit my parents on a Monday, we have spaghetti for dinner together.
When I think of simple traditions that form out of habit and a little bit of desire to recreate fond moments, I smile. It makes me happy to think of my kids coming home when they are older, and it’s a Friday, so they ask if they can help me make pizza dough.
What are some simple traditions that your family has created? Tell me about routines with your family that you love.

My husband cooks breakfast on the weekends. I love the chance to drink coffee, read the paper, and play with my son while he’s cooking!

Sounds like such a fun tradition that your kids will always look forward to.
Mr Chiot’s and I usually have eggs, bacon & toast on Sunday evenings. We love to have pizza on friday night, but don’t always get around to it.

I love moments and the little traditions. I think they can easily rival Christmas. The memories are often sweeter and there is much less work and expense!

Pancakes on Friday, baked apples on Saturday am during winter months, smoothies during the summer months.
A hike or time outdoors one weekend day. During the warm months it’s a whole day, the coldest months of the year (we’re in Maine) it’s an afternoon of sledding or snowshoeing or something like that.

As my husband works shifts, we have invented Family Movie Night! We grab a family video, either one we own or a Quikflix one, have some prepared pasta, and settle down to some serious movie watching with home made popcorn! All 3 of us love it….

Every Sunday after church we have spaghetti with homemade Italian herb bread. Like you, I don’t break my neck to pull it off, but as long as I have a minute before church I toss all the sauce ingredients in the crock pot, so when we get home I just have to make the spaghetti.

I normally cook breakfast on the weekends, my wife gets a chance to relax and sleep in if she can. It isn’t something we really planned out but my wife cooks all of our other meals with a few exceptions so I want to give her a little break.
I also go on dates with my oldest (3) just this weekend we went to the park and then I took her to a nice little Greek place that she had never been to. I told her it was out date and she loves them.

My husband doesn’t have a set schedule with work (Army) so having a weekly ritual isn’t quite do-able for us at this time.
But we do lots of things all together and cherish the times we have together and with our boys… the hubby and I usually ended up playing Wii for a bit each evening
We lived four years together without any type of video game, and we bought this at Christmas and play almost every evening! It’s kinda funny

I really like the look of your template. Did it cost a lot to buy or did you build it yourself?
