We got our 4 year old daughter this Discovery Amazing Money Jar Bank for Christmas.
For two months, she has been gathering her coins and has $10.13. She hasn’t spent any yet. She wanted to use it to take me on a movie date. How cute is that? But we learned there is a free movie at the library this Friday night, complete with popcorn. A happy compromise – she gets to go on a date with mommy and keep her pennies.

I was a big saver when I was little. I had this awesome little bank that looked like a combination lock. On the front it said, “A penny saved is a penny earned”. I love that thing and loved watching it fill up with coins. When it was full my parents took me to the bank and deposited it into my savings account. I’ve always been a saver, I love to watch my savings account balance grow more than I want “stuff”. Don’t know if it was the little bank, but I’m sure it didn’t hurt. I was glad I saved as I finally used all my savings when I was in college to help pay for books and stuff, I’m proud to say I graduated from a 4 year private college with no student loans, partially because of my childhood savings (and scholarships).

I never learned saving when I was young, mostly because I never had a steady source of income (not even allowance). Now that I’m older, I kind of wish my parents had gotten me one of these.

There are two great signs you are raising your daughter right in one post. She is learning to save money and is kind enough to want to spend it on you! Great work!

You can’t teach them too young. I’m 60 now and it hasn’t been ubtil the last two years that I have been able to save successfully. A friend of mine got her son to save after a few unsuccessful attemps by promising to add 10% to his saving every six months. Now she can’t stop him from adding every penny he finds – yes even those he finds in the street – to his money box. Margaret
