Pretty Kitchens

Pretty Kitchens

One of the things that has made me crazy throughout this remodel process is that my contractor, aka hubby, seems to think that once a room has walls that it is complete. He doesn’t see the need for things to look pretty the way I do. And so it goes that the remodeled kitchen, while functional and nice and somewhat pretty and even quite a simple kitchen (note: it doesn’t look like that right now – which is part of the problem), still has a few details that remain unfinished. The one that I keep hounding hubby on and he keeps not doing it is the subway tile backsplash that I want. I have let that get in my way from keeping the kitchen lovely anyway. I have been letting the transitional feel of our remodel and our projects keep me from making what we have today how I want it. Shame on me. My goal over the next few days is to remedy this situation. I’ll post before and after photos when I am done. In the meantime, here are some photos that I am using for inspiration. I know my kitchen won’t ever be any of these but I can take from them what is beautiful and practical for my family.

I opened the comment page and started to type, but looking at those kitchens made me decide to go clean mine — talk about inspiration! ;) (But that last pic, with the fruit in the bowl labeled “cheese” — that just irks my OCD side like crazy…. it’s a beautiful kitchen, but…. that’s just wrong.)

You have such wonderful inspiration pictures. I didn’t quite know what you meant when you said “subway tile,” but it looks amazing.

I think all husbands are the same. Mine has somehow put off a 10 minute project that I’ve been asking him to do for a month. I’d do it myself, except I’m scared of the circular saw. One cut! Just one! That’s all I need!

Thanks for this gentle reminder. I’ve been feeling the same way lately about certain areas of our house. I have a tendency to wait until everything is the way I want it before I enjoy it. Looking forward to your pictures.

Good luck! I really like subway tile backsplashes. We may do that in our cabin. Of course, who knows since our backsplash here is still not done. LOL I also would love a farmhouse sink. Husband wants to do the open shelves. I love that look in magazine pictures, but don’t think it is practical in my life…

The first 3 pictures were all exactly along the lines of what I want for my kitchen! Unfortunately it’s not happening any time soon, although I’m supposed to get my bathroom done next week (only been waiting one full year for it).

I really love the one at the top with the yellow. I’ve been craving yellow a lot lately–must be sun deprivation! I’ve been wanting subway tile in my kitchen since we moved in 5 years ago, so I hear ya. I have a project to-do list several pages long. Maybe someday I’ll have a kitchen as lovely as these…

Thanks for joining my blog party! So nice to have you with us this week. :-)

I love subway tile too, especially the glass version. Good luck with putting it up. Just a backsplash shouldn’t take you too long. Can’t wait to see the progress.

Those are beautiful kitchens. I once had one but we downsized into a house w/pink tile on the floor. The walls are not wood or plaster or drywall, sort of cheap old paneling. After looking at the big picture for 3 years, I finally took wall paper border down and bought some paint. My husband and I put laminate tiles down which look awesome for under $100. We also bought a restaurant table and 2 wire shelves. We had to tear back to one wall so out went the cupboards. You know, because I’ve gotten rid of all but the essentials in my kitchen, it looks wonderful and simple, simple, simple. Of course I would love a country sink, but I find great joy in the old stainless sink when it is empty, sanitized and shiny! My four white plates, 4 white bowls and 3 glasses look beautiful and clean above the sink. I put my spices in small canning jars with silver lids. The food is neatly set on a small wire shelf. I am so happy to have this home with my wonderful husband and son. For us, simple, frugal living is what I like to see in my big picture. I am thankful for everyday we have together.
