Seeing Beauty In The Everyday
February 22, 2009 at 11:14 pm , by Emily
Sometimes I’ll catch myself getting caught up in the day to day, waiting until another time to stop and notice the wonderful and beautiful things that are happening around me. Instead of sitting on the floor playing with my kids in the middle of the day, I am waiting for play time at the park or beach. Instead of slipping into beautiful moments in front of me, I sometimes let them slide by because I am looking toward what’s coming soon. While anticipating a visit to the beach, I’ll miss the giggling of the kids playing together. While getting ready for a trip to the park, I’ll miss an opportunity to do a puzzle on the floor with one or both of my kids.
Sometimes I am rushing through our weekdays in anticipation of the weekend. All the while missing beautiful moments in the middle of the day on Thursday. I need to stop myself more. Stop and notice the beauty in the everyday. Notice the little things. Appreciate the small moments of each day, like morning snuggles, baking brownies, reading books to tiny minds, making homemade pizzas together, laying in the grass with my kids who live in a world full of wonder. Moments that are full of more beauty than even a sunset at the beach. And full of a lot more love.

A new camera is helpful with this, isn’t it?
Sometimes I have places to go, but then notice that the kids are playing so well together, so why should I stop them if I don’t really have to? Sometimes it’s hard to forgo other plans in place of doing “nothing”, but so long as I’m enjoying and appreciating that “nothing”, it’s probably better in the long run.

I also keep trying to remind myself that weekdays can be enjoyed, too, instead of just survived. I took a hot bath on Thursday night (something I usually only do on the weekend) and what a difference in made in my perspective! I have a feeling you do a pretty decent job of staying in the moment–those beautiful, unplanned moments–better that most.
Secondly, I am so jealous of the camera quality this generation gets to enjoy. Your pictures are gorgeous.

I like what Sara said about the weekdays. I’m just living to get through them right now. I need a “do better” plan for the weekdays. I will need to think about that one.

Sara, you nailed just what I was trying to describe. Sometimes, while waiting for “the perfect moment” I will forget and miss a lot of perfectly good or great moments that are more real or beautiful. And often what I am looking forward to (a visit to the beach or an afternoon at the park) ends up being less than what I build up in my head (red tide, anyone?) because moods and needs change. Like Alison described, sometimes I need to just realize that the small moments right here in front of me at home are important and while they may seem like nothing, they really are something.

Awww, nice post!
I, too, get caught up in everything we have going on in our lives. I always feel we have a million errands to rush around and get done, but my son has started whinning when we need to leave saying that he wants to stay at home and play with his toys. Last night, I decided that we aren’t running errands today. We’re going to stay home and he’s going to get to play all day long. I’m sure the house will be a disaster, but that’s part of the fun!

I can relate to this. Every day is so rushed trying to get things done that we so often miss out on ordinary moments which are actually extraordinary. Like my toddler helping to give my baby a bath. The exchange of smiles between the two is absolutely priceless and beautiful.

Your pictures remind me that sometimes, kids are easy — they’re so amused by the mundane, like sitting on the floor and coloring, or looking at the clouds in the sky. They know how to take pleasure in the everyday. We could do with taking a leaf out of their books.
