If there is anything that my son turning two has shown me is how quickly life is flying by. If I am not careful, too many moments full of things that don’t matter will add up and I can look back thinking, “If only I had done more of what matters.” I am purposeful not to let that happen. Whether it’s taking the time to go outside and roll around in the grass and let the kids cover me with sand or falling asleep with a kid who wants to be snuggled to sleep, making a point to focus on what matters most in these fleeting days is so important.
My kids don’t care how much money we have or how much money we spend. My son just had a weekend full of birthday celebrations. I baked cupcakes to take to the park so he could run around with friends and cover his face in chocolate all in one morning. Cost? $3. Friday night, we made another cake and gave him a couple of his favorite things – a couple puzzles and a toy car. Cost? $18. He doesn’t care what something costs – he just enjoyed being around smiling family and friends and having a day that was his.
There is only so much any of us can supply in terms of material goods or wealth. But we have an unending supply of love to give. Which of those matters most?

So true. If you think about it most often the things you really relish and enjoy in life have little to do with things or money. They’re most often time spent with the ones we love.

Happy birthday to your son–he is SO cute! Loved the photos in the earlier post. Glad he had a fun day. That is such a fun age, and it really does go quickly.

Oh, this is so true! I loved your post. When my first child was born, I remember someone telling me to enjoy him while I could because it all went by too fast. I didn’t believe her! However, I always played with my three kids, even with the two boys, and had tons of tea parties with my daughter. They are now 40, 36, and 33. And I still wish I had done more. Sounds like you are and will be taking advantage to enjoy every single day with your precious boy. May the Lord bless all your fun!

Amen to that! When they get older they wont remember “what” they got but that they were loved and were with family who loved them. Thanks for the reminder! Gotta go snuggle with my little one now.

My parents really worked to teach us that exact message as I grew up. It makes all the difference in how you look at life… and even more, how you find yourself enjoying the littler things like time with your family.
Thanks for this wonderful reminder.

Great post! I wrote a similar one the other day. These are troubling times to be sure but how bad can life be when we have little ones to remind us of what is really important?!
Again, thanks.

Oh, my little 2 year olds grew up to be 20, 17 and 8 in the blink of an eye! I would go back and spend even more time with them, even though I was purposefully spending time treasuring them even then! Looking back it was such a short short period of time, I really can think of so many more things I wish I had done! But at least I remember holding their little faces in my hands and looking in their big eyes to capture the fleeting moments.

My husband and I decided starting this year that we are limiting birthday presents and Christmas presents. We are going to start giving our girls outings with us. The outing can be one on one with Mom or Dad. Or an outing as a family. Those will be the memories that they remember. Not that they received X for their 2nd Birthday.

Having quality family time is what matters most for us as well. My DH and I love spending as much time with the kids as possible and love doing simple activities with them. You can’t put a price on these activities as they are priceless. Our favorite frugal activity is tennis. My kids are young, but they love running around the court and hitting the ball. So fun to play with them and watch them exercising.

What a sweetie pie! Yes, you will turn around suddenly one day and wonder where the years went. Our five are 18 to almost 24. I can remember wishing fervently that Peter Pan would come when my two were 4 and 6. These years are magic. Savor them. Lovely blog, I’m subscribing!

You’re so right, isn’t it amazing how sometimes we have to step back from the hustle and bustle of current living and determine what’s right for yourself. Spending time with people is much more important than spending money and it’s also amazing at how many things you can do which doesn’t actually cost that much
