I borrowed this idea from a fabulously creative, crafty and artistic friend. She doesn’t have a blog, otherwise I’d link to it. Anyway, here it is. So simple.
Supplies:
Easel (got mine at Hobby Lobby)
Tile (Home Depot) – I chose one with a lip
Photo
Foam brush
Mod Podge
To do:
1. put a layer of mod podge on tile
2. set photo on tile, let it set
3. slather on a layer of mod podge, repeat until you achieve the look you want, letting dry between coats.
4. set on easel
I gave my parents each one of these with their Christmas gifts and they just loved them. I plan to make a few more to give to other family members and a few to place around our home.
did you have to have the tile cut to size? or the photo? or did it just work?
this is a fabulous idea – i’m all over it for next Christmas.

I had to trim the photo a bit. the tile is 4×6 but because of the lip that I chose in the tile style, I had to cut the photo. You can really do whatever sizes you want in the tile and photo and just buy accordingly. This was easiest as my first time doing it but I’d like to do some bigger ones soon and I’ll just buy a tile size I like then order photos and trim them as necessary. Another thing I am doing with the next round is to do the photos with a sloppy border before printing. My friend did that with hers and it looks really great.

Adorable idea. You could even get a patterned tile and cut the picture slightly smaller to create a bordered look.

Nicki you are right – I thought of that after publishing that a tile with a pattern could provide a border. so many options!

Lovely idea
I’ve never used mod podge and am wondering whether you could use these as actual wall tiles. Is mod podge waterproof? I’ll be having my bathroom retiled at some point and would love to have some photo tiles dotted around the walls.

@Sharon J – from a quick online search, it looks like there are ways to seal it after so that it is waterproof but just the mod podge is not.

I found your blog from a link over at A soft place to land. I love this project you did with the tiles. I have a question about it though. It sounds like you are using actual photo prints to modge podge on the tile. Has your tile pic stayed looking the same way as when you first did the project? No yellowing involved? I am just curious as I am wondering if you use a real print it would smear the print?? As I said, just curious as I would love to do this project.
