Picking Fruit

Picking Fruit

I was delighted to return home last week and see that my new avocado tree had two big shiny avocados on it!

I picked them and am letting them ripen inside before the critters eat them. I would be really sad if that happened.

Don’t they look yummy? They better be yummy. The tree cost us $80 in February (hubby gave me a certificate to a local nursery and I bought the tree with part of it). So these avocados are about $40 each. Not bad, huh? ;) I can’t wait to eat my $40 salad!

Also last week, we went out to our fig tree in the yard and picked a bunch of figs.

The tree was here when we bought the house. I think I have said before that while there was little, if anything, redeeming about this house when we bought it, it was made up for in the fact that it has quite a nice yard. Big (to us) with really pretty palm trees, cedar trees, and fruit trees. There is also an orange tree out back and a kumquat tree too. But those aren’t for picking right now. The figs are.

Honestly, I have never been a big fig eater. I mean, we have this tree in the yard but all I thought was “we can make fig newtons!” I started picking them and oooh are they yummy! The kids gobble them up. Hubby wants to make fig jam but I am not sure they’re going to make it past the pickers to make it so far as a jar of jam. We’ll see.

Nice avocados! I am a big fan. Maybe even big enough to plant one in my yard? How big is the tree? Does it grow wide?

@Hank, I think they just get really tall, like 25 to 30 feet without pruning. Ours is a Zutano Avocado

Fresh figs are soooo good! Lots of healthy fiber in them too! I am envious that you have a tree. It’s on my list of fruit trees to plant when we get to the yard (they should grow pretty well over here in So. California).

Love your blog, btw. Can’t remember how I found you, but I’ve been through all your archives and love to hear about your remodel stuff.

    Have a good week!

I absolutely love figs, and can’t wait to have a fig tree of my own. I’m sure that since your avocado tree is off to a good start that you’ll get to have quite a few more.

I LOVE Avocados and figs! My neighbor has a fig tree and fresh figs are just SO GOOD.

Those avocados are expensive… you’ll have to let us know how good they are once they’re ripe! But surely the tree will give more fruit in the future?

I sure hope I get more than these two! Harvesting is through the fall so I hope to see many more to make the price per avocado go down a bit :)

Those might be the prettiest avocados I’ve ever seen, and at forty dollars, they’re only slightly more than El Torito.

When I was growing up in Costa Rica we had just about everything you can imagine growing in our yard: mangoes, berries, lemons, guayabas, jocotes, corn . . . it was the best thing in the world to go out to the yard, pick whatever you wanted, and come back inside and eat it. Think of the avocado tree more as a long term investment (don’t put so much pressure on those two poor little avocados :-) ).

You have mastered getting passive income to a “T”. You go off on holiday and come back to find these juicy fruits waiting for you. If this is not passive income, someone please tell me what is.

$40 each these fruits maybe per your calculation, but the rest from now on are free.

    Hooray for you.

    Cheers
