Picking Fruit

I was delighted to return home last week and see that my new avocado tree had two big shiny avocados on it!

I picked them and am letting them ripen inside before the critters eat them. I would be really sad if that happened.

Don’t they look yummy? They better be yummy. The tree cost us $80 in February (hubby gave me a certificate to a local nursery and I bought the tree with part of it). So these avocados are about $40 each. Not bad, huh? ;) I can’t wait to eat my $40 salad!

Also last week, we went out to our fig tree in the yard and picked a bunch of figs.

The tree was here when we bought the house. I think I have said before that while there was little, if anything, redeeming about this house when we bought it, it was made up for in the fact that it has quite a nice yard. Big (to us) with really pretty palm trees, cedar trees, and fruit trees. There is also an orange tree out back and a kumquat tree too. But those aren’t for picking right now. The figs are.

Honestly, I have never been a big fig eater. I mean, we have this tree in the yard but all I thought was “we can make fig newtons!” I started picking them and oooh are they yummy! The kids gobble them up. Hubby wants to make fig jam but I am not sure they’re going to make it past the pickers to make it so far as a jar of jam. We’ll see.
