Name That Plant

Name That Plant

In my patio post from last week, Sara at On Simplicity said that this plant here

is quite impressive and asked what it is. Well, I thought it was a Hosta. Yes, really, I did!

I had the following conversation with my mom yesterday

Me: “You know my Hosta outside the living room, off the patio? Why is it tall and flowering instead of short and fat like all of yours?”

<hysterical laughter from mom>

Mom: “Because it’s not a Hosta! It’s a Canna Lily”

Oh.

Of course, this is from me, the girl who gets Hydrangeas and Hibiscus mixed up just because they both start with H.

Can you see we’ve been busy this weekend? I am so thrilled with the progress on the whole patio area. I painted the table and chairs red and hubby grouted the tile of the patio and built the pergola. I planted lots more flowers in pots too. It’s been fun!

    If you’re talking about the tall plant with orangish bloom at the top, it’s a canna.

    Calla lillies are usually shorter and their bloom is more wrapped around itself.

    Love your blog and attitude.

    Your porch is gorgeous! The red patio furniture is to die for! My husband and I tossed around the idea of a pergola instead of a screened in porch… I just don’t know what to do!

    Love the red for the patio table and chairs. I am not great at remembering the name of plants either so completely understand your confusion. Bottom line is the names aren’t so important as how great they look and I think your patio is looking great.

    I’m the same way with plants. I wouldn’t know a hosta from a rose. I had to double check with my wife on the names when doing a post about our own landscaping project this week. Love the patio and furniture – they look great!

    Oddly enough, I’ve always had a mental block with hostas. I know what they are but I can never think of the name when I see them.

    Great patio set.
